For me, what makes a movie good enough to recommend comes down to if it’s entertaining or engaging. Was watching that film pure joy and an entertaining period of distraction, or was it more difficult to watch but the story sticks, and as a result it generated engaging and interesting conversation?
Here’s some recs for both.
For a good conversation:
The Power of the Dog
New | Film | Netflix
I found the story almost painful to watch I was so stressed out, and yet I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since and over time it has moved up to one of my favorite films of 2021. Fantastic.
The Hand of God
New | Film | Netflix
I don’t like watching movies about horrible people, and I found most everyone in this film to be horrible. Not sure I understood it all, but I am certain that the acting was so incredible that I melted into the scenes and enjoyed discussing them afterwards.
The Lost Daughter
New | Film | Netflix
There was so much hype that my expectations were pretty high. Olivia Coleman and Jessie Buckley are fantastic. I was confused by some scenes and characters but it has made for excellent conversation on relationships, work and motherhood.
Don’t Look Up
New | Film | Netflix
Genuinely want your thoughts: Do you think this movie will influence behavior when it comes to combatting climate change? And for who?

For pure joy entertainment:
Encanto
New | Animation | Disney+
Watched twice and I can’t stop singing “We don’t talk about Bruno-no-no-no…”
Spider-Man: No Way Home
New | Action Movie | In Theaters
Did you know there is such thing as a 4D theater?? If you see Spider-Man at the TCL Chinese Theater’s 4D cinema (and I’m not saying you should) you’ll experience moving chairs and bursts of wind to emulate soaring through the air with Spider Man, or the smell of burning rubber when there’s a car explosion. Regardless of all that, I loved the Spidey story and reuniting with past villains.
Tick Tick Boom
New | Musical Movie | Netflix
Had me at the Therapy song.

Is anyone else watching 1883? I never watched Yellowstone but Taylor Sheridan says he writes each season like it’s a single movie. At 3 episodes in I’m so into 1883. Also watch his film Wind River if you haven’t already.
