King Richard
New | Movie | In Theaters & HBO Max
Feel good family film and great biopic. Will Smith is (of course) excellent as “King” Richard but my favorite parts were with Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton as Venus and Serena 😍. At 2h25m I wouldn’t cut thing and loved the pacing.
PS Richard’s line of “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” has been echoing in my head all weekend. (👏👏 Mary!)

The First Wave
New | Documentary | In Theaters now & Hulu 12/5
This is not another film about COVID. Its a story about humanity, family, determination and hope. It’s a time capsule of NYC during the first wave, from inside one hospital and three homes. It’s the patients and their families, and the doctors, nurses & physical therapists on the frontlines. The story also powerfully connects the dots between the pandemic and the protests.
It’s an incredible documentary and a piece of history.
Also it’s made by the power documentary team of Matt Heineman, National Geographic (congrats Ryan! 👏👏), Participant Media and NEON.

Passing
New | Drama | Netflix
Saw at Sundance virtually but wish I had experienced its beautiful black and white cinematography on the big screen. Excellent film to spark conversations on identity and belonging.

Paper & Glue
New | Documentary | In Theaters & soon MSNBC
Quick paced doc on the artist JR and the impact of his work. If you work in art or impact (or both!) it’s mandatory viewing.

If you missed it in theaters, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ is now on Disney+. If you’re ready for a cheesy holiday movie that almost borders on cringey before pulling it off as classic Christmas rom com, enjoy ‘Love Hard’ on Netflix.
And if you watched Tiger King but actually care about the cats, join me Monday night on Kinema.
